John Dean Nature House

Past - Present - Future

In 1987 (age 13),  I saw a photo of John Dean’s cabin Illahie. The caption said: “Location unknown - Date unknown.” Since then, I have assembled more than 700 pre-1980 photographs, and have fully researched the subject history. I'm so thankful I started when I did, as many of my sources have since passed on. I’ve tapped into the spirited and rich history of Mr. John Dean, old timers, archives and the mountain. It’s a major story, and it’s available in three books.

John Dean’s Life Story  - Park History - 65 Photographs

The story of John Dean, one of the true pioneers of British Columbia, is one of those sagas that give the lie to those who believe Canada’s history to be dull. This man set a superb example of responsible citizenship.  He was the first to stand up for urban planning, and was the first to donate a large chunk of his private land to create a major provincial park.
